Alton studied painting and sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He started doing conservation of furniture and frames in 1970 which is still his primary occupation. Customers are museums and private collectors. The study of furniture led to making original furniture inspired by antique pieces. He enjoy traveling to study art & furniture in museums in Europe and the United States. Alton is presenting a paper on the above project at the International Symposium of Ebenists at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in November, 2018. He is a Professional Associate Member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.
Alton also authored “The Flower Mound – A Field Guide to the Flowers and Grasses” as a gift to finance The Mound. He served as chair of The Mound Foundation for over 30 years.
